Technical Information on Using Praxis EMR with your iPad

So you just bought your iPad, and now you wish to use it with Praxis.

First off, it is important to understand that Praxis is NOT installed on the iPad; rather, the iPad interacts with the Praxis application already installed on the workstation, server or cloud you presently use (the remote server).

Therefore, for your iPad to interact with Praxis, simply connect the device via remote access to the remote server and you are in business.

Easier said than done, right? Ok, let us walk through the basics.

  • What is Remote Access?

Remote access is technology that enables one computer to share information with another. In the present case, we are talking about using a thin client (the iPad) to communicate with the host. Thin clients are devices with little more than interface tools (a screen, keyboard, mouse, and speakers) and a computer especially programmed to send and receive messages from these interfaces to another computer for processing. The iPad is one of the best.

  • Making your iPad Compatible with Windows

The iPad is manufactured by Apple and, therefore, to enable it to interface with the Windows operating system, a small program is needed to convert from Mac to Windows. The best one is Jump, which costs less than $30. Download it and presto; your iPad will communicate seamlessly with a computer running on the Windows operating system.

  • Using a Terminal Server

On setups where thin clients are served from a Terminal Server, you can experience the sensation of using the same computer as another person at the same time. Terminal servers can connect several users with a different Praxis and Oracle at the same time using the same hardware. It then sends the different streams of back-and-forth information to the correct originating computers, including thin clients like the iPad.

The Terminal Services server is supported as an official feature on: Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition; Windows 2000 Server; all editions of Windows XP (except Windows XP Home Edition); Windows Server 2003; Windows Home Server; Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs; Windows Vista Ultimate, Enterprise and Business editions; Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2; and on Windows 7 Professional and above. Alternatively, you can use a VNC application, which will enable a VNC server on a Windows Desktop.

Praxis recommends that the Oracle Database be placed on a third server of its own.

  • Using a Cloud

A cloud is comprised of clusters of memory space existing in several servers (sometimes in the thousands) that time-share your use with that of many other users at the same time. These servers enable thousands of applications and thousands of users to work simultaneously. The processing speed is much higher than you can get with a single server. To illustrate, think about how YouTube makes it possible for a user to view a complex video while a million other people do the same; this gives you an idea of the amazing ability cloud servers have to transmit information.

Again, you connect through the cloud with your iPad via the internet (whether you use a wireless connection or a fast phone/internet connection, the result is the same). The only requirement is that you have enough bandwidth to transmit the look and feel plus keyboard/mouse inputs back and forth. Where you iPad is located, and where the server is located are not relevant.
